Variation of crops

Concept Explanation

Variation of crops

Variation means difference between individuals of the same species. The basic idea is to choose or select two varieties of crops, each of which has at least one desirable quality, such as high yield or resistance to disease. And then cross-breed them to produce a hybrid variety which has the good qualities of both varieties. This process of cross-breeding between genetically dissimilar individuals is called hybridization. Hybridization may be of the following three types.

1.  Intervarietal: between two different varieties of the same species

2.  Interspecific: between two different species of the same genus

3.  Intergeneric: between two different genera.

Generally, intervarietal cross-breeding is used to produce high-yielding plants.
